Important women in India:

Women in India have played an important role in all the major fields. A brief account of some of the most important Indian Women is given below:

1. Savitribai Phule:

Savitribai Phule was the first women teacher in India. She opened a girls school along with her husband Jyotirao Phule in Pune, Maharasthra.

2. Chandramukhi Basu & Kadambini Ganguly

Kadambini Ganguly and Chandramukhi Basu were the first female graduates in 1883 for India.

Kadambini Ganguly was also a physician and had the knowledge of western Medicines. Chandramukhi Basu was a lecturer in a reputed college.

3. Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu or the Nightingle of India was born on 13th February, 1879 in Hyderabad. She was the first Indian women president of Indian National Congress in 1925 and Governor of the United Provinces ( 1947 – 1949).

4. Asima Chatterjee

Asima Chatterjee was born on 23rd September, 1917 in Kolkata. She was an Indian Chemist and became the first Indian women to get Doctorate of Science in the year 1944 in India.

5. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

The sister of Jawarhar Lal Nehru, Ms. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was became the first female president of the UNGA (united nations general assembly) in 1953. She was born on 18th August, 1900 in Allahabad.

6. Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi or Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born on 14th January, 1980 who was the only girl of Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru. She was the first women prime minister of India after Lal Bahadur Shastri in the year 1966. She was also the 2nd longest serving women Prime Minister of India.

7. Kamaljeet Sandhu

Kamaljeet Sandhu is the first Indian women from Punjab created history by winning Gold medal at Asian Games in 1970 in 400 meter race.

8. Kiran Bedi

Kiran Bedi is born on 9th June, 1949 in Amritsar in Punjab. Kiran Bedi was the first Indian women IPS (Indian Police Service) officer in 1972.

9. Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was a Research Scientist in NASA, USA. She was born on 17th March, 1962 in Karnal in Haryana. She created history for becoming first Indian women in space and Indian-American astronaut. She was one of 7 members of Space Shuttle Columbia which get crashed during arrival to India on 1st Feb, 2003.

10. Pratibha Patil

Pratibha Patil is born on 19th Dec, 1934 in the district of Jalgaon in Maharasthra. She was the first Indian women President (12th) of India. She served as president of India from 2007 to 2012.

11. Meira Kumar

Meira Kumar is a politician and first Indian women got elected as speaker of Loksabha in 2009. She was born in Bihar on 31st March, 1945. She is also a lawyer by profession and former diplomat.
